San Pietro Barisano
San Pietro Barisano
The church of San Pietro Barisano, was partly excavated in the calcareous rock mass called Sasso Barisano, and partly completed by setting up blocks of the same stone; it is considered the largest of Matera’s rupestrian churches.
At present it is a large exhibition space, dedicated to cultural events of various kinds, and thus constitutes a segment of the large open-air museum represented by the historic centre of Matera.
